What is the Home View?
The ADHQ Home View is an Active Directory browser. It is used for browsing through containers, and making changes to Active Directory objects by selecting them and running ADHQ tools. The Home View will be your primary working view for every-day use. Users that have used Microsoft's Active Directory Users and Computers will feel right at home in the Home View, described in detail below.
Home View Layout
General
The Home View is used for navigating Active Directory and making changes to AD objects. The Home View interface is divided into 3 primary sections:
- The Ribbon
- The ribbon is positioned across the top of the interface, and is used for launching ADHQ tools, as well as modifying the current view settings.
- Active Directory Tree
- The Active Directory Tree is shown on the far left side of the interface. It contains top level folders for your profile's managed areas, and the Configuration and Schema of your network.
- Tab View
- The Tab View on the right side of the interface shows details for the selected item in the tree. It has two different tabs, the Child Objects list and the Attributes list.
The Ribbon
The ribbon in the Home View provides two primary functions:
- Executing ADHQ Tools on the currently selected object
- Modifying the view
You can execute ADHQ tools on the currently selected object(s) by clicking on one of the buttons in the Tools panel of the ribbon. Below is a description of each tool button on the ADHQ Home View ribbon:

| Other | Perform other operations on the currently selected Active Directory object(s). This button may contain several tools, including Enable/Disable, Deprovision, Reset Password, and Send an Email. The specific tools available depend on your profile rights and the type of object selected. |
| Import | Import data from a file to either add new Active Directory objects, or modify/delete existing objects. |
| Custom Tools | The custom tools menu contains custom tools designed in the Custom Tools view. To add/remove items from this menu button, use the Edit Custom Tools Menu button in the ribbon of the Custom Tools view. |
The other main function of the ribbon on the Home view is to modify view settings. The Refresh button will refresh the contents of the currently selected container. The Show only containers in tree checkbox can be cleared to make ADHQ show Users, Contacts, Groups and Computers as containers. The search field below the checkbox is used to quickly locate items in the tab view below. Enter a search query, then hit Enter to jump to the nearest instance of that text in the view. The Export to File button is used to save the contents of the tab view to a file for viewing later. This button will save either the Child List tab contents or the Attributes tab contents, whichever tab is currently active. Finally, the Print button will print the current view.
Active Directory Tree
The Active Directory Tree is shown on the far left side of the interface. The tree contains the areas of Active Directory your profile has permission to manage, potentially including the Configuration and Schema directories. Click on an item in the tree to load it into the tab view on the right side of the interface.
The Configuration folder is a network-wide container that has settings for network sites and services, as well as other configuration settings. The Schema folder contains formal definitions of every object class and attribute that can be created in your Active Directory forest.
Tab View
The Tab View has two tabs, the Child List and the Attributes List. The Child list is the default view and shows the child objects of the object selected in the Active Directory Tree to the left. In the Attribute List tab, ADHQ shows a grid with all of the attributes of the selected object instead of its children.
Child List
The Child List shows the child objects of the selected object in the Active Directory Tree. For instance, if you have your domain selected in the tree, you will see in the Child List any containers or OUs within your domain, like the Users and Builtin containers. Double-clicking on a container or OU in the Child List will select that container in the Active Directory Tree and show its children in the Child List instead. In this way, you can easily navigate the tree without leaving the Child List tab.
Right-clicking on an object in the Child List will show a context menu. The context menu provides access to many tools including Properties, Enable/Disable, Reset Password, Deprovision, and Delete. You can select several objects at once by using Shift + Lt Click to select adjacent items and Ctrl + Lt Click to select non-adjacent items. Then, right click anywhere within your selection to access the context menu.
Attribute List
The Attribute List tab shows the attributes of the selected object in the Active Directory Tree. In this tab, you'll see a grid containing columns with the Attribute Name, its Type, and the Raw and Interpreted Values of the attribute.
Caution
Launching ADHQ tools from the ribbon with the Attribute List visible will run them on the selected object in the tree.This is different than the normal behavior, which would modify the selected object in the Child Objects tab.
